What can I do before my first lesson to help me prepare?

Hi and welcome to your pre lesson prep, your first step to getting a full driving licence!

The first thing you need, before your lesson can take place, is to generate a licence check code.  This lets your instructor check your licence without you needing to share personal information.  You can find out how to do this on the below link.  Once you've done this please send the code to your instructor.

View or share your driving licence information - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Take a bit of time to think about how you like to learn.

Do you like to just give it a go?

Does a demonstration work for you?

Would you like to read up on a subject before you work on the practical side of it?

Do you like pictures, text, a verbal talk through or none of that?

Understanding how you learn is a massive help when learning a new skill or technique.

The guides below will help give you a basic understanding of what you may cover on your first lesson.  You could following up your reading by researching videos on the below subjects or by asking fellow drivers for their thoughts.  Reading things doesn't work for a lot of us, in fact very few learners would chose this as their preferred learning method.  Do what works for you.

Happy reading and remember if you're not sure about anything or have some questions just give me a bell or drop me a text on 07934860469.

Lesson Goals

I'd like to get some feedback on how I'm currently driving and make a plan moving forward.

I'd also like to have a little look at my manoeuvres
What am I proud of?

  • I'm really happy that we've now got a plan and I know what I need to work on
  • My car control was great, I got into a car that I'd never driven before and got straight on with it!
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes my speed is a little quick when approaching hazards, junctions, roundabouts or bends in the road.
  • My mirrors aren't always consistent, especially when changing direction
  • Towards the end of my parallel park I was mainly focused on my left mirror which prevented me from carrying out all round observations

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson we're going to carry out a mock test.  We're also going to take a look at my bay park and PUORR

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend focusing on speed on approach to hazards, junctions and roundabouts.  If your speed is too fast coming up to hazards or junctions it can cause the following:

You may lose control of your car

You may need to brake harshly, at the last moment, which could cause a collision from the car behind

Other drivers are confused by your intentions which can make priorities at hazards such as meeting situations or roundabouts confused.  For example a vehicle that has priority around a parked car may hold back as they feel you're going to take the priority.

I'd also focus on establishing your mirror use.  You know when and which mirrors to check however when driving more challenging roads you sometimes forget to check them, in particular when changing direction within the same road.

You could use Intermediate Route 4 to practice the above skills.  It has a lot of junctions and parked cars so should really help you to fine tune and establish the above areas.

I'd also recommend focusing on your all round observations whilst completing a parallel park.  Your main risk area is towards the end of your park when judging your distance from the kerb.  Remember there is nothing wrong with stopping and having a quick check all around you.

If you'd like further areas to work on I'd recommend using any of the experienced routes.  These are all focused on challenging areas around the test centre.

Lesson Goals

I'd like to do a mock test today

GOAL CHANGE

As some issues arose on the way to the test centre we looked at correct use of speed where space is restricted and meeting situations.
What am I proud of?

  • By the end of the lesson my use of speed was hugely improved, I felt more in control
  • I'm starting to plan much further ahead
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I forget to check my mirrors
  • I'd like to react sooner to developing hazards and situations
  • Sometimes I go into 1st gear when the car is still moving.

Our plan for next lesson

We'll pick up the manoeuvre work we didn't fit in this lesson.

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend focusing on establishing your mirror use.  You know when and which mirrors to check however when driving more challenging roads you sometimes forget to check them, in particular when changing direction within the same road.

This is currently your biggest driving challenge and I'd recommend purely focusing on this before your next lesson.

I'd recommend using any of the experienced routes.  These are all focused on challenging areas around the test centre and require a lot of mirror use.

Date: 26/11/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to work on all my manoeuvres today

I'd also like to work on my development areas from our last lesson
What am I proud of?

  • My manoeuvres were fab
  • My use of my mirrors got better as my lesson progressed
  • My correct use of first gear was great
  • I've started to plan further ahead which means I'm adapting my speed to the road conditions
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I still forget to check my mirrors
  • I still need to look further ahead so I can effectively plan for any hazards or road changes ahead of me
  • I need to remember to keep my eyes on the road and not let my attention drift elsewhere

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson we'll focus on hazard perception, planning and awareness

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend continuing to focus on establishing your mirror use.  This is still one of your biggest driving challenges.

I'd also recommend trying to look further ahead when you're driving.  Try to noticing any potential or developing hazards and have make a plan to deal with them.

Date: 03/12/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to work on hazard perception, anticipation and planning
What am I proud of?

  • My hazard perception and planning went really well.  I feel more confident and I'm thinking and planning ahead.  I've reduced my speed which is making this easier to do.
  • I'm checking my mirrors a lot more now
  • My ability to drive in a very narrow space where there are lots of parked cars is great.
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I still forget to check my mirrors
  • Sometimes my driving is still a little fast
  • When going around corners to enter a new road I sometimes forget to drop to 2nd gear.

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson we'll focus on the test areas around Prestbury, Cleeve and Southam

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

As per previous weeks I'd recommend continuing to focus on establishing your mirror use.  This is still one of your biggest driving challenges.  Not checking your mirrors could potentially lead to safety issues for you and other drivers.

Date: 10/12/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to work on the Prestbury double roundabout.  I'd like to focus on my use of mirrors and dropping to 2nd gear for corners.
What am I proud of?

  • My mirrors are really starting to improve
  • I'm now dropping to 2nd gear when needed
  • I'm far more relaxed with other drivers now
What I'd like to work on?

  • I'd like to do some more work on the Prestbury double roundabout in particularly being aware of who's around me and my road position
  • I need to be more aware of traffic lights as I see amber as go as opposed to be prepared to stop

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson we'll continue to focus on the Prestbury roundabout

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
I'd recommend working on the Prestbury double roundabout in your private practice

Date: 07/01/22
Lesson Goals

I'd like to work on the Prestbury double roundabout.  I specifically want to look at my road position and observations on the roundabout
What am I proud of?

  • The Prestbury double roundabout went really well.  I feel more confident and feel like we've covered the roundabouts now.
  • I feel like my planning was really good this lesson.  Everything I do is feeling more thought through.
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I'm a little hesitant at roundabouts, I'd like to work on this

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson I'd like to carry out a mock test

Date: 10/01/2021
Mock Test Results

The following are your serious faults: 3 Serious (major) faults

When traveling along the 30mph section of Southam you began increasing your speed before reaching the NSL change of speed limit sign.  You can only increase your speed when you pass this sign

You speed going over the bridge on Southam lane, towards the junction with Kayte Lane was too fast for the road conditions

When taking the second exit on a roundabout you used your left indicator when entering the roundabout.  This has the potential to confuse other drivers as they believe you will be exiting at the first exit

The following are your driver faults: driver (minor) faults

You forgot to signal right on one occasion

Your right signal came off when turning right at a roundabout and it took some time for you to put this back on

Your left indicator was late on one occasion

You speed was too fast for the road conditions on one occasion

You were losing speed going up the hill by the race course as your car was in too high a gear for the speed and road conditions

You forgot to check your right mirror when overtaking a bike

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend focusing on your use of speed and matching it to the road conditions.  This is currently your largest challenge when it comes to passing your test.

Date: 28/01/22
Lesson Goals

I'd like to continue to work on my speed and get it under control as I'm often driving too fast for the road conditions

I'd like to understand the changes to the HC
What am I proud of?

  • I've now got a good understanding of the changes to the HC
What I'd like to work on?

  • My speed is still too fast for the road conditions on a lot of occasions

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson I'd like to continue to work on my use of speed.  I'd also like to take a look at my manoeuvres

Date: 04/02/22
Lesson Goals

I'd like to drive independently and work on faults as they come up.
What am I proud of?

  • My overall standard of driving was good, I'm now starting to reduce my speed in line with the road conditions
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes my speed can still be a little fast

Our plan for next lesson

Next lesson I'd like to sit a mock test
