What can I do before my first lesson to help me prepare?

Hi and welcome to your pre lesson prep, your first step to getting a full driving licence!

The first thing you need, before your lesson can take place, is to generate a licence check code.  This lets your instructor check your licence without you needing to share personal information.  You can find out how to do this on the below link.  Once you've done this please send the code to your instructor.

View or share your driving licence information - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Take a bit of time to think about how you like to learn.

Do you like to just give it a go?

Does a demonstration work for you?

Would you like to read up on a subject before you work on the practical side of it?

Do you like pictures, text, a verbal talk through or none of that?

Understanding how you learn is a massive help when learning a new skill or technique.

The guides below will help give you a basic understanding of what you may cover on your first lesson.  You could following up your reading by researching videos on the below subjects or by asking fellow drivers for their thoughts.  Reading things doesn't work for a lot of us, in fact very few learners would chose this as their preferred learning method.  Do what works for you.

Happy reading and remember if you're not sure about anything or have some questions just give me a bell or drop me a text on 07934860469.

Your pedals
Use of signals
The move off process

Date: 21/10/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to focus on turning the car on, getting it going and understanding what the pedals do
What am I proud of?

  • I feel really proud of how I worked and understood the clutch
  • My confidence grew loads!
  • Changing gears went really well!
  • I was really pleased with how I used the brake pedal and gently stopped the car
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I get concerned by what other vehicles are doing which means I forget to look where I want my car to go
  • When I'm in 2nd gear the car goes faster which sometimes concerns me.  I'd like to feel more confident in 2nd gear

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to focus on my positioning of the car and spend more time in 2nd gear

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'm going to practice looking in the correct place when I'm a passenger in the car.  Remember to lift your vision to allow your eyes to see more from your peripheral vision.

I'm going to get Joe to explain to me what he's doing when he's driving.

I'm going to teach my mum and Joe what I learnt today to help me process my learning.

Date: 29/10/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to spend more time in second gear.

I'd like to master braking before getting out on the roads as I'm a little worried I won't be able to stop in time.

I'd like to get out onto the roads
What am I proud of?

  • I feel really proud that I drove through town, I'm so pleased that I didn't panic
  • My turns improved greatly this lesson
  • I spent more time in 2nd gear and managed to get 3rd gear.
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I panic when under pressure which causes me to lift my clutch too quickly and the car stalls.  I'd like to work on this.
  • I'd like to work on holding the car on the bite point to help me when I'm moving off from junctions.

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to go over what we've learnt so far.  I'd also like to look at bay parking

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend researching the different gears and what they're used for.  You might want to do this online or alternatively you might want to ask people who already drive what they use the different gears for.  You could also practice changing gears in Joe's or someone else's car when the engine is off.

Date: 12/11/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to focus on my clutch control and finding the biting point.  I'd like to be able to find it quicker.  I'd currently rate my ability at this skill as a 5/10
What am I proud of?

  • I feel really proud of how much my clutch control improved
  • The beginning of my hill start was great
What I'd like to work on?

  • Sometimes I pull my clutch up too quickly when releasing my and brake.  I'd like to work on this
  • I'd like to work on increasing my speed when I leave junctions and getting my second gear sooner

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to work on busier roads and emerging onto main roads.  I'd also like to start looking at parking.

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend prioritising your theory.  If you can pass your theory we can look to book in a practical test.  A great place to start would be to purchase a copy of the highway code and start reading this.  All the questions in the theory test are based on this

Date: 26/11/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to begin looking at forward bay parking to look at my clutch control

I'd also like to look at emerging out of junctions
What am I proud of?

  • I'm really proud of my parking, my clutch control was hugely improved
  • I'm pleased that I now know how to stop and junctions and can get up to the giveway line
What I'd like to work on?

  • I'd like to do some more work on my pedal coordination at junctions which will allow me to move out more rapidly
  • I'd like to work on knowing when I can go at junctions

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to work on all my development areas next lesson

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

I'd recommend asking anyone who is driving to explain what they're doing with their feet when they come up to and emerge from junctions.

Date: 03/12/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to drive on more roads this lesson to build my confidence and work on the coordination of my pedals
What am I proud of?

  • I'm really proud of how I was independently changing gears with great clutch control
  • I'm far more confident when driving junction now
  • My coordination of the pedals is hugely improved
What I'd like to work on?

  • I'd like to work on how much I need to brake for hazards
  • I'd like to work on increasing my speed when leaving junctions
  • I'd like to work on rolling first gear
  • I'd like to continue to work on my positioning at junctions

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to build on todays lesson.

Date: 14/01/2021
Lesson Goals

As it's been a while since my last lesson I'd like to focus on getting my confidence back and remembering what I've learnt previously
What am I proud of?

  • I'm really pleased that my confidence is back, I remembered what I was doing and I'm happy that I can still do, what I've previously learnt
  • My moving off was fab when I kept myself calm
  • My clutch control was great, I held the car on the bite point on a really difficult junction
What I'd like to work on?

  • I'd like to work on trying to chill out and not panic when there are other cars around putting pressure on me
  • Sometimes I forget to select first gear before moving off
  • I'd like to work on moving off quicker by using more gas

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to focus on a quicker move off.  I'm going to write a list of things I need to do/consider to see if this helps me next lesson

Date: 21/01/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to work on my development areas from last lesson
What am I proud of?

  • I'm really pleased that I'm now putting my brake straight down if I stall to secure my car and warn other road users that I'm not moving
  • My move off is far quicker now that I'm using some accelerator
  • My clutch control when reversing is great
What I'd like to work on?

  • I often stall the car when moving off, I'd like to work on this
  • I'd like to do some more work on a quicker move off

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to work on not stalling when moving off from junctions

Date: 04/02/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to work on reducing stalling.  I'm going to do this by trying to control the internal pressure I put myself under.  I'm going to hold the car just above bite and allow the wheels to gain momentum before fully releasing my clutch
What am I proud of?

  • I'm really pleased with my rolling 1st, it's now becoming established and I'm thinking less about it.
  • My stalling hugely improved this lesson
What I'd like to work on?

Sometimes I'm a little unsure where to stop when turning right off the major road

I still sometimes struggle under pressure

Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to work on the loop by my house, focusing on emerging from junctions and turning into side roads
