Assessment Lesson

What do I need to do before my assessment lesson?

The first thing you need, before your lesson can take place, is to generate a licence check code.

You can find out how to do this on the below link.

Please send the check code, along with the last 8 characters of your driving licence to your instructor.

View or share your driving licence information - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The charge for an assessment lesson is £60, this needs to be paid in full, via bank transfer, upon booking to secure your lesson slot.

Your instructor will send you all the details.

Any lessons cancelled with more than 48 hours notice are fully refundable.  Any lessons cancelled within 48 hours, off the lesson start time, will be chargeable in full.

What could I practice before my assessment lesson?

If you're currently practicing in your own or someone else's car I'd recommend looking at any of the Blue Monkey Experienced routes.

You can find these
HERE

These routes will help prepare you for the type of challenges and roads you're likely to face on your driving test and give you an idea of what to expect.

Your Driving Test

Your driving test will last for approximately 40 minutes.  You'll need to bring your provisional licence and theory pass certificate with you in order for your test to go ahead.

Your test will take the following format:

Eyesight Test

You will need to demonstrate that you can read a car number plate from 20 meters away.

Tell Me Question

You can find these HERE

This under the bonnet GUIDE will help you revise some of the tell me questions.

Independent Drive

You will need to either follow the sat nav or directional sign posts for approximately 20 minutes.

You can find the DVSA guidance on this HERE

Remember this is a test of your ability to drive safely whilst driving completely  independently, it is not a test of your ability to follow directions.

Taking a wrong turn or missing a direction will not result in a fault or test fail, providing you do so safely.

Show Me Question

You can find these HERE

Manoeuvres

You will need to be able to carry out one of the following 3 driving test manoeuvres, if your test is at Cheltenham test centre.

Forward Bay Park
Parallel Park
Pull up on the right and reverse 2 to 3 car spaces

If your test is at any other test centre you may be asked to complete a reverse bay park.

Emergency Stop

One in 5 tests will also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

After your assessment lesson

After your lesson we will make one of the following recommendations:

Your driving is not at test standard, we recommend postponing your test

It is your choice if you wish to do this however we will not be able to provide you with a car for your test or further tuition.

An intensive course

If we feel you could reach the required standard, before your test, we'll offer a 5 or 10 hour intensive course.

An agreement to provide an intensive course does not guarantee that we will provide you with a car to take to your test or accompany you to test.  This is dependant on you reaching the required test standard prior to your test.

Your driving is at test standard

We'll be happy to accompany you to test and provide you with a car to take your test in

My Highlights

  • Your mirrors hugely improved throughout your lesson
  • You began to slow your speed to start planning ahead
  • You began to look higher which allowed your brain to gather more information from your peripheral vision.  This helped correct your road position which was previously too far to the left.
My Development Areas

  • At the moment your planning is restricted to what is happening immediately in front of you.  You need to start looking far further ahead and plan accordingly.  For example you need to slow down sooner if you see a developing hazard ahead.  This may mean coming off your accelerator or applying your brakes.  Remember your brake pedal activates your brake lights which help communicate your intentions to the following drivers.
  • You need to be checking your mirrors anytime you change speed or direction.  When changing speed you need to be checking your middle mirror and when changing direction you need to be checking your middle mirror plus the side mirror that corresponds with the direction change your taking.  This includes when you moving around parked cars.  When moving off from stationary you need to make sure you're checking all mirrors and your blind spots
  • You need to make sure you're following a clear routine when driving.  Before you do anything you need to check in your mirrors you can do it, use a signal to tell people you're doing it and then do it.
  • Remember before you change down gears, reduce your speed to an appropriate level for that gear

The outcome of my assessment lesson

I'd recommend postponing your test as I don't feel you're currently test ready and it's unlikely you'll reach that standard after a 5 hour intensive course.  Based on this I wouldn't be able to provide you with a car to take your test.

Recommendations before taking your test/your intensive course

If you still decide to go ahead with your test make every practice session count.

I'd recommend looking at the signal guide, which you can find HERE, this will start to get you thinking about how you can use your car to communicate to other road users.  Remember your speed and road position also communicates a message to everyone around you.  Use this to your advantage.

I'd pick one of your development areas from above and work on that until you're happy it's turned into a strength.

I'd recommend having a look at Intermediate Route 3 which focuses on the Prestbury roundabout.  This will help increase your knowledge of how this works.

I'd also recommend using Experienced Route 7 and Experienced Route 9 to work on the narrow roads around the test centre.  Use this route to really focus on planning ahead.  Think about what's happening ahead of you.  If there's oncoming traffic do they or you have priority?  If you have priority does the other car look like it's acknowledging this or is it safer to give them your priority?

If you have any questions just shout.
