Reflective Log
Date: 15/04/2021
Lesson Goals

As I've had a prolonged gap in my driving I'd like to refamiliarise myself with the car controls and feel confident again
What am I proud of?

-
I feel more confident when changing gear
-
I'm feeling more confident about driving again
-
My road position on my left turns has greatly improved
I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes I forget to indicate as I'm thinking about all the other things I need to do
-
I'd like to focus more on using my left and right mirrors
-
I'd like to begin to increase my speed
Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to increase my speed confidently so I can explore different practice areas in my lessons.
Date: 23/04/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to spend this lesson working on safely and confidently increasing my speed.
What am I proud of?

-
I worked really hard this week on increasing my speed, this meant that we could widen my training area and start to look at new roads.
-
I'm really proud that I drove myself home
I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes I still forget to use my indicator, I'd like to work on this
-
I'd like to work on improving the accuracy of my turns
-
I'd like to do some more work on using my road position to indicate to other road users my intentions. For example in meeting situations sometimes I position my car in a parked position, this can confuse traffic approaching from behind me
Our plan for next lesson

I'd like to use the larger practice area we explored today and specifically work on using 3rd gear.
Date: 30/04/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to spend this lesson working on using 3rd gear. To be able to work on 3rd gear we'll increase our practice area. As we're using a larger area with potentially more traffic I think I'll also need to focus on building up my speed to enable me to drive at an appropriate speed for the road. I'll also need to work on avoiding sudden changes of speed
What am I proud of?

-
I worked really hard this week on increasing my speed, I understand that I need to match my speed to the road and driving conditions and this is progressing well
-
I worked really hard at maintaining a constant speed. Sometimes I struggle to maintain my acceleration when leaving a junction or changing gear. This improved greatly this lesson
-
I'm proud of how I introduced and worked on my gear changes, I worked on changing up gears using 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear and changing down gears from 3rd to 2nd
I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes I struggle with maintaining my speed, I'd like to work on this to maintain a suitable speed for the road and driving conditions
-
I'd like to do some more work on my gear changes so they become established
Our plan for next lesson

My priority next lesson is that I continue to see improvement on all driving areas that we're working on. I'd like to continue to work on my use of speed and gears.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

Before my next lesson recapping my move off routine (from a parked position) will help me remember this each time I move the car. You can find a guide HERE which will help you remember the order in which to do things.

Date: 07/05/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to spend this lesson working on managing hazards and planning ahead. Sometimes I panic and my instructor needs to operate some of the controls for me. I'd like to work on not panicking and managing all of the controls. I can do this by planning ahead and read what is happening further down the road. I'd like prompts from my instructor to help me achieve my goal.
What am I proud of?

-
I'm really proud of how my management of hazards improved this week. I felt less panicked and dealt really well with changing road conditions.
-
I'm pleased with how my introduction to hill starts went. I found this hard as there were so many different things. I persevered and my hill starts were great when moving away from the side of the road.
-
I'm really pleased with how my driving as a whole improved, I'm beginning to build muscle memory and this is showing in my driving.
I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes I struggle managing hazards when under pressure. I'd like to work on this to help me build the skills I need to drive on busier roads.
-
I feel pressured when completing a hill start at a junctions. Specifically when other vehicles are behind me. The pressure sometimes makes me rush my move off procedure which causes the car to stall.
Our plan for next lesson

My priority next lesson is to continue working on managing hazards and performing hill starts, specifically when under pressure.

I also don't fully understand why I need to change down gears for corners or roundabouts. I'd like to work on my understanding.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

Before my next lesson you could research how gears work and why we need to gear down for obstacles such as corners, roundabouts or negotiating parked cars. You can use google to research this area.

If you're beginning private practice I'd recommend using Beginner Route 6 & Beginner Route 7. These routes will help you work on negotiating hazards and meeting traffic but are also quiet routes so will give you a great practice area.
Date: 14/05/2021
Lesson Goals

I'd like to spend this lesson focusing on my hill starts. I sometimes struggle with how far to lift my clutch which can result in me going past the bite point of the car. I need to release my clutch slower and then pause at my bite point. Currently I'd scale my hill starts as a 4/10 and would like to increase that to a 6/10 this week.
What am I proud of?

-
I'm really proud of how my hill starts improved. I'm far more in control of my clutch pedal as I'm now lifting it slower and pausing at the point I release my handbrake.
-
I found it really tricky exiting the roundabout today as there were parked cars blocking the road. By slowing my speed and controlling my steering I hugely improved my accuracy and drove this really well by the end of my lesson.
-
My road position on left turns was great this lesson.
-
This week I significantly increased my speed and managed 24mph on occasions.
I'd like to improve on?

-
My hill starts have hugely improved however I'd like to do a bit more work on them to make them consistent.
-
I really want to increase my speed and feel confident doing it.
Our plan for next lesson

My priority next lesson is to work on increasing my speed and feel confident doing it. We've discussed using busier roads to do this as our normal training area can be a little restrictive due to the road conditions and layout.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning

Before your next lesson I'd recommend having a little look at Princess Elizabeth Way on google maps. What potential hazards can you see? How might you deal with them? What support would you like to help you deal with them? You might want to ask someone to drive you down there so you can observe how they deal with any hazards.
I think this will really help you on your next lesson, we can have a chat about this at the start of your lesson and make a plan between us.
Date: 28/05/2021

I'm really proud of how I improved on my reversing in a straight line. I'm now using tiny movements on my clutch which has allowed me to greatly reduce my reversing speed
-
I worked on the accuracy of my steering, in reverse, whilst my instructor controlled the speed of the car, this went great
-
I made a great start on parallel parking
I'd like to improve on?

-
I'd like to work on straightening my car up when I reach a parked position, I'll achieve this through repetition and looking ahead.
-
I'd like to practice parallel parking some more.
Our plan for next lesson
Next lesson I'd like to look at busier roads again. My instructor has set me the challenge of devising a route for us to look at in my next lesson.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
Before your next lesson have a look at the local roads, either on google maps or when someone else is driving. Have a think about a route you'd like to drive and any potential hazards or risk points.

What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
It's great that you're now able to practice in between lessons, I think this will really help your driving.
I'd recommend taking it slow and building up both yours and your mums confidence. You might find it useful to buy an extra interior mirror for your mum to use when practicing with you. You can pick these up from Halfords. You place it on the windscreen in a position that helps your mum to see what's behind. The view should be similar to what you can see in your central mirror.
I'd recommend starting with Beginner Practice Route 6 and Beginner Practice Route 7.
If you'd like any other routes to work on, before you next lesson, let me know and I'll add them to your log.

I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes my car drifts slightly to the left when I'm concentrating on other things
-
Sometimes I drift slightly to the left when taking left turns
Our plan for next lesson
I'd like to start my lesson by reversing the car off my drive. I'd like my instructor to asses what I've done in my private practice this week.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
I'd recommend focusing on the simpler routes to help build your mum's and your confidence. If you're gripping the wheel and not feeding it like you normally do think about the tension you're holding in your shoulders. Try giving your shoulders a wriggle which should help you to not grip the steering wheel.
When moving off think about the car your driving, the road conditions and the space you're moving off from/into. How much accelerator will you need to use to give you a smooth move off.
I'd also recommend thinking about your mirror use, if you're turning left which mirrors should you be checking? If you're turning right which mirrors should you be checking? Every time you change speed or direction you should be checking your mirrors.
Focus on your road position and your left turn, if you feel your position slipping question yourself if you're still looking high and ahead or if you're looking at the road and blocking your brain receiving all the information from your peripheral vision.
I'd recommend sticking with Beginner Practice Route 6 and Beginner Practice Route 7.
Only move on from these routes when you and your mum are confident. You could then look at any of the beginner routes.
Remember if you'd like your mum to sit in on one of your lesson I'm more than happy for her to do that.

I'd recommend continuing to look at simple roundabouts. You could follow Beginner Practice Route 8 to help you do this. If you need any help understanding where the route goes please give me a call or text.
I'd also recommend going to an empty carpark, the carpark at the back of the swimming pool on Tommy Taylors Lane is great for this. Look for the area at the back where there are no other cars. Practice placing your car in different parking spots both in reverse and forward. Think about keeping your speed very slow by using clutch control.
When parking forward imagine you're taking a sharp right turn into a narrow road. This will help you visualise where to position your car.
When reversing look for the bay lines using your mirrors and by turning your head. If you find you're not ending the manoeuvre in a bay simple take your car back out and reposition. In your test the manoeuvre does not need to be completed in one go. You will have chances to reposition. Your objective is to end with the car in the bay.

-
My signal timing really improved
-
My roundabouts were great
I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes I try to emerge too early onto the main road when other cars are coming towards me. I think this is caused by approaching the junction too quickly so I need to start braking earlier
-
I still need to work on maintaining an appropriate speed for the road conditions
Our plan for next lesson
I'd like to begin to work on bay parking. I'd also like to work on my junctions and going at the correct times.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
I'd recommend researching the acronyms:
MSPSL
MSM
Whilst these are often confusing to some learner drivers they definitely have there place and you may find them useful, we can discuss them next lesson.
Date: 26/11/2021
Lesson Goals

Sometimes I leaving stopping a little late which results in a harsh jerk when I stop. I need to work on using my brake to bring down my speed first before pressing my clutch
-
Sometimes I drive over the kerb when making sharp turns, I'd like to work on this
-
I'd like to do some more work on making quick decisions when driving
Our plan for next lesson
I'd like to build on the work we've done today.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
I'd really recommend working on the route we drove today. You can find this route below
Experienced practice route 7A
I'd focus on your left turns, think about steering slightly later to avoid the back wheels of your car travelling over the kerb. I'd also prioritise effectively managing meeting situations and mirror use in the narrower roads around the test centre.
I'd strongly advise prioritising working on the above route as opposed to general driving. This will ensure your current test date is realistic and that we get you a test before I go off on maternity leave.
Any questions at all just shout and I'm always happy to help.
Date: 28/01/2021
Lesson Goals
I'd like to work on my parallel park. I'd like to feel more confident in my ability and be able to complete a park independently
What am I proud of?

-
My parallel park went really well and I managed to complete the last one independently
I'd like to improve on?

-
Sometimes my observations aren't great when completing my parallel park. I feel that I need to be more confident in the manoeuvre itself and know what to do and when in order to build in my observations
Our plan for next lesson
I'm going to practice my parallel park in the week in my private practice. We're going to have a look at the work I've been doing in my next lesson to check that I'm happy with my parallel park. Once we're happy with this we're going to move onto looking at the roundabouts by the test centre
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
I'd really recommend working on your parallel park this week. The more you're able to practice the more likely it is we'll be able to move on to focusing on other areas you'll need in your test. Without private practice it's unlikely that we'll be able to go to test at the end of March.
Date: 04/02/2021
Lesson Goals
I couldn't practice my parallel park this week so we're going to revisit this
What am I proud of?

-
My parallel park went really well. The process is more cemented in my mind and my observations are improving
I'd like to improve on?

-
When completing independent driving I struggled. My speed was too slow for the roads resulting in cars waiting behind me. There were times when my gear changes were late and needed to be prompted. When entering a busy roundabout I wheel spun as I applied too much acceleration
Our plan for next lesson
Next lesson we're going to continue practicing on driving independently and work on driving at the correct speed for the road.
What can I do before my next lesson to help my learning
Currently your driving is a significant way off test standard and it's likely you will need to postpone your test unless something changes. The key to being test ready will depend on the practicing you do in between lesson. Alternatively you could decide to only focus on driving in your weekly lesson and plan for a later test date when your driving is at test standard. The approach you'd like to take needs to be your decision.
We've discussed working on the following this week on private practice. Whilst going for a long drive may help your confidence it won't focus on your development areas, I would prioritise shorter dives with specific goals for each session. You can then revisit your goals at the end of your practice session. You've committed to working on the following:
Currently your 3rd to 2nd gear changes are quite sharp and cause the car to jolt. We've agreed that a great plan would be to practice moving from 2nd gear to 3rd gear and back down again on a long quiet road to help you get the hang of it. Remember before your change down your gear you first need to reduce your speed to an appropriate level for the car you're driving. In my car that's 12/13mph however it may be different in your mums car. We then agreed that you'd test your progress in an area where there's lots of bends, junctions and roundabouts that require you to drop to 2nd gear.
If you need a practice route for this let me know and I'll happily send you one
Alongside practicing your downward gear changes we also agreed that you'd work on increasing your speed, where appropriate, when leaving junctions/hazards to allow you to rapidly get an upwards gear change and not hold up the traffic behind you.
Date: 11/02/2021
Lesson Goals
I'd like to work on my 3rd to 2nd gear changes as currently I'm changing down when I'm going too fast. I'd also like to work on going the correct speed for the road.
What am I proud of?

-
My clutch control on hills was good when under full instruction
-
My speed on 30mph roads was much better
What I'd like to work on?

I struggle with clutch control on hills when doing it independently
My speed on the NSL roads is far to slow and causes a hazard
I'm still changing down to 2nd gear when going too fast
Our plan for next lesson
I'd like to work on my speed on faster roads and my 3rd to 2nd gear changes
Date: 25/02/2021
Lesson Goals
I'd like to work on increasing my speed on faster roads
I'd like to work on decreasing my speed before dropping to 2nd gear
What am I proud of?

-
I'm now speeding up after hazards by pressing harder on the accelerator. This is making it safer for everyone
-
By taking quick glances at the speedo and applying more accelerator when needed I'm keeping up with the speed limit more frequently
-
My 3rd to 2nd gear changes are much better, I'm achieving this by putting more pressure on the break before changing gear
What I'd like to work on?

My speed is still a little slow on occasions. I'd like to get more confident at using my accelerator and gears effectively.
Our plan for next lesson
I'd like to do some work on the DC to help me increase my speed.
