Assessment Lesson
Date: 04/01/2021
My Highlights

-
Your move off process is good, you're carrying out good all round observations and pulling off smoothly
-
You drove the Prestbury double roundabout well
-
Your use of mirrors when going around parked vehicles or hazards is good
-
Your general standard of driving is fair
-
Your road position improved greatly throughout your lesson when you lifted where you're looking
-
Your parallel park improved as we worked on it
My Development Areas

-
On times you're hesitant when leaving junctions. Sometimes there is space for you to enter the new road however you brake to a stop instead. This isn't what the driver behind is expecting you to do and increases your potential for a rear end collision
-
Your clutch control and use of the handbrake on hills needs to be worked on. You're lifting your clutch too high before releasing your handbrake which is either causing the car to stall or you to burn the clutch
-
When turning left or right you frequently forget to check your mirrors
-
You need to be going up your gears sooner as opposed to continuing to drive in 2nd gear which puts additional strain on your car and engine
-
Sometimes you roll over the give way line at roundabouts when you're still making your decision if you should go or stop. Your decision must be made before you cross the give way line or you risk causing other drivers to slow or potentially cause a collision
-
Your manoeuvres need work. Your observations aren't always up to standard. Your parallel park improved however there is still work to do to make it consistent
The outcome of your assessment lesson
I think your driving is of a fair standard however currently falls below the required test standard. A number of your development areas have the potential to cause risk to yourself or other road users. Remember on test your examiner is purely there to assess and has no legal requirement to intervein in the case of a safety critical incident.
To get you ready for a test on 7th Feb you'll need a minimum of 12 hours tuition. This takes into account that you're unable to complete any private practice on top of lessons.
I could fit in the following intensive lessons:
Wednesday 19th Jan: 1pm - 5pm
Either Tue 25th Jan 3.45pm - 7.45pm or Thur 27th Jan 2pm - 6pm
Wed 2nd Feb: 1pm - 5pm
That would give you a lesson a week in the run up to your test.
I charge £160 per intensive lesson including online support. The total cost will be £480 for your course plus a test day fee, dependant on how long you choose your test day lesson to be. This fee is normally £60.
An agreement to provide an intensive course does not guarantee that we will provide you with a car to take to your test or accompany you to test. This is dependant on you reaching the required test standard prior to your test. Provided you reach this standard we will be happy to accompany you to test.
All fees are payable in advance, via bank transfer, and your course will only be booked in once payment has been received. Courses are non refundable if cancelled within 48 hours of their start date/time. Any courses cancelled more than 48 hours in advance or due to a national lockdown or local restrictions are fully refundable.
You can find some details about the format of the practical driving test below.
About Your Driving Test
Your driving test will last for approximately 40 minutes. You'll need to bring your provisional licence and theory pass certificate with you in order for your test to go ahead.
Your test will take the following format:
Eyesight Test
You will need to demonstrate that you can read a car number plate from 20 meters away.
Tell Me Question
You can find these HERE
This under the bonnet GUIDE will help you revise some of the tell me questions.
Independent Drive
You will need to either follow the sat nav or directional sign posts for approximately 20 minutes.
You can find the DVSA guidance on this HERE
Remember this is a test of your ability to drive safely whilst driving completely independently, it is not a test of your ability to follow directions.
Taking a wrong turn or missing a direction will not result in a fault or test fail, providing you do so safely.
Show Me Question
You can find these HERE
Manoeuvres
You will need to be able to carry out one of the following 3 driving test manoeuvres, if your test is at Cheltenham test centre.
Forward Bay Park
Parallel Park
Pull up on the right and reverse 2 to 3 car spaces
If your test is at any other test centre you may be asked to complete a reverse bay park.
Emergency Stop
One in 5 tests will also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Lesson Goals
I'd like to revisit Westall Green and work on my road position around the roundabout
I'd like to look at my road position in general on roundabouts
I'd like to look at my manoeuvres
I'd like to spend some time on the Prestbury double roundabouts
I'd like to complete a mock test
The results of my mock
My serious faults (Test Fails): 6 test fail faults
Road Progress
At the roundabout at the end of All Saints Rd you waited a considerable length of time for traffic that was exiting before the entrance to the roundabout you were using.
Observations
When traveling along London Rd a car pulled out of a garage alongside you. I needed to take physical action by taking the wheel to prevent a collision
Control
When moving off at traffic lights, on an uphill incline, you failed to use clutch control or the handbrake. This resulted in you rolling a significant distance backwards
Control
When stopped in busy traffic you lifted your clutch too quickly resulting in you stalling the car in live traffic
Road Position
In busy traffic you stopped to allow oncoming vehicles priority however as you pulled in close to the kerb you appeared parked resulting in traffic from behind becoming confused and passing you
Observations
When traveling towards a junction (you were on the major road) a car began to pull out towards you. Instead of stopping you continued to drive forward nearly causing a collision.
My driver faults: 8 Faults
Road Markings
You failed to stop before the advanced stop line and instead stopped in the bike box
Mirrors
You failed to check your right mirror
Control
On an uphill junction you failed to hold the car on the bite point or secure it with the handbrake. This resulted in you slightly rolling back when leaving the junction
Progress
You were unduly hesitant when approaching a roundabout
Control
You lifted your clutch too quickly which resulted in a stall, no other road user was affected
Use of speed
Your speed was too quick for the road conditions
Awareness
You were too close to the car in front
Meeting traffic
In a meeting situation where you should of held back you proceeded to squeeze through leaving very little space for you and the oncoming vehicle
Our plan for next lesson
The areas you're failing in fall into 2 key areas, awareness and planning & clutch control.
I'd recommend working on awareness and planning before brake, broken down into the following areas:
Use of speed both to communicate your intentions to other road users and to progress at a speed suitable to the road conditions

Awareness of potential and developing hazards, their impact on you and other road users and how to safely deal with them (including the new updates to the highway code)
Awareness of the road ahead to help with planning of junctions including roundabouts
Use of road position to communicate to other road users your intentions and also allow you an easy escape route
I'd recommend working on car/clutch control after break, broken down into:
Effective use of the clutch on hills and timing of adding acceleration
Effective use of the handbrake and when to use it
Testing of the above at busy junctions including light controlled
This should leave a small amount of time at the end of our session to revisit your manoeuvres
