Assessment Lesson

What your driving test will cover

Your driving test will last for approximately 40 minutes.  You'll need to bring your provisional licence and theory pass certificate with you in order for your test to go ahead.

Your test will take the following format:

Eyesight Test

You will need to demonstrate that you can read a car number plate from 20 meters away.

Tell Me Question

You can find these HERE

This under the bonnet GUIDE will help you revise some of the tell me questions.

Independent Drive

You will need to either follow the sat nav or directional sign posts for approximately 20 minutes.

You can find the DVSA guidance on this HERE

Remember this is a test of your ability to drive safely whilst driving completely  independently, it is not a test of your ability to follow directions.

Taking a wrong turn or missing a direction will not result in a fault or test fail, providing you do so safely.

Show Me Question

You can find these HERE

Manoeuvres

You will need to be able to carry out one of the following 4 driving test manoeuvres.

Forward Bay Park
Reverse Bay Park
Parallel Park
Pull up on the right and reverse 2 to 3 car spaces

Emergency Stop

One in 5 tests will also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Date: 16/10/2022
My Highlights

  • Given your level of experience your standard of driving is really high!
  • Initially you were swinging out into the centre of the road, when taking left turns.  This is as you were looking for traffic coming from the right for too long, this caused your driving line to following your line of sight.  By taking little glances to the right as opposed to staring you've hugely improved in this area.
  • You increased how far you were looking into the distance.  This allowed you to plan further ahead and your decision making really started to flow.  Your driving felt more thought out and experienced.
  • At the start of your lesson, you were leaving your clutch down when traveling around corners.  This meant your car was often speeding up and you were losing positioning control.  This improved hugely throughout the lesson and now your pedal timing is significantly better
  • At the start of your lesson you were only looking to your immediate right when approaching roundabouts, this meant you often missed gaps in the traffic.  You're now considering all entrances and using blocker cars where possible.
  • Your use of speed on faster roads was great.  You drove within the speed limit but also made progress.
My Development Areas

  • Your position when taking left turns still needs a little further work
  • When reversing your instinct is to look in front of you or in your centre mirror.  You need to work on looking primarily in the direction your car is travelling in conjunction with effective all-round observations
  • When reversing on the right side of the road you need to make sure you're making periodic checks in your right mirror.  This will allow you to check your cars positioning in relation to the kerb and maintain a consistent distance from the kerb.
  • Your mirror use needs further work as it's still very sporadic.  You need to work on making mirror checks something you do every time you change speed or direction
  • You made huge improvements negotiating roundabouts today however there is further work to do on this.  There are instances where you're hesitant and there are times when you forget to check your mirrors and signal when leaving the roundabout.  There are also some positioning issues to work on.
  • We are yet to cover bay or parallel parking so this is currently an unknown

The outcome of your assessment lesson

I think your driving is of a far higher standard than would be expected for the hours tuition you've had and whilst there is a still a lot of work to do, I don't think your test date is unrealistic.

To get you ready for a test at the start of November I feel you'd need an intensive course of a minimum of 20 hours of tuition.  If you were able to put in significant private practice between lessons there's a possibility this could be reduced to 15 hours dependant on the amount of targeted and supported practicing you did.  I'm happy to support private practice with online progress logs from your lessons and suggested routes if you wanted to go down this route.

A 20 hour course would be made up of 4 x 4.5 hour lessons plus 2 hours on your test day, 5 days in total at a total cost of £940.

I could accommodate the below as a 20 hour course,

Monday 24th October 4pm-8.30pm
Thursday 3rd Nov 7.30am-12
Sat 5th Nov 3.30pm-8pm
Sun 6th Nov 4pm-8.30pm
Tue 8th Nov (test day) 12.50 - 2.50pm

All fees are payable in advance, via bank transfer into the Blue Monkey business account, your course will only be booked in once payment has been received.  Courses are non-refundable if cancelled within 48 hours of their start date/time.  Any courses cancelled more than 48 hours in advance are refundable minus a £50 admin fee.

Recommendations before taking your test/your intensive course

If you're able to practice before your next lesson let me know and I'll update some driving recommendations and practice routes.

I'd familiarise yourself with the correct move off process, you can find this on this LINK.  Making sure you know the theory will save you time in your practical lessons.

When you're a passenger, sitting in the front seat of a car, I'd recommend altering your line of vision to understand what height gives you the best visibility.  Having your eyes at the correct level will increase what you see in your peripheral vision and allows your brain to automatically guide you into the correct road position.

Finally, again when you're a passenger, I'd recommend mentally checking the correct mirrors throughout the journey.  If you can make this an automatic response you'll find it a lot easier to practically implement your mirror checks.
